EncuentrosWith these pieces, we bring into consideration the characteristics that bring us closer to vegetal beings, instead of emphasizing what differentiates us from other species and families, as has been done for centuries. The project also suggests a modified image of the human, whose anatomical structure is associated with and dialogues with that of vegetal beings.
Encuentros -1 In this set of sculptural pieces, branches of different botanical species meet and merge into one another, giving rise to a continuum. Thus a branch of encenillo — a native species of the Andean sub-paramo — merges with a branch of eucalyptus, a species from Japan. The series ends with the piece La superneurona, made in France, where the crown of a pine from America is coupled with a European White Chestnut.
Encuentros con Seres Notables. The piece simultaneously presents three images that the public can immediately recognize: the image of Michelangelo's painting The Creation of Adam, the image of human arm and hand bones, and branches of two varieties of trees slightly intervened. It evokes associations with concepts of creation, life, death, as well as pacts, alliances, and transmissions of knowledge. It presents fusions between distant species and even between different kingdoms.
In the video Mesa de trabajo, which is part of this series, a replica of the face of the Venus sculpture is broken and reduced to dust with the help of various domestic implements. This dust is then mixed with water to model a figure that combines human and vegetal anatomy.
Encuentros cercanos is an installation located outside the space of the Museum or Gallery, seen from inside, through a window. We see a tree emitting a morse signal, so that the image of the tree and of the signal enters the room, where the message is decoded on a small screen near the window. The phrase being emitted is “En cada inhalación nos encontramos” (“In every inhalation we meet”).
