En el fertil suelo

2017–2018  /  Video, sculpture  /  Variable dimensions

"En el fertil suelo" relates to the political moment we were living in Colombia in the years following the signing of the Peace Process.

In the video, a hand slowly uncovers a text that lies beneath many layers of sand. When it is about to reach its goal and we manage to read some of the inscription that was covered, the other hand covers the text again, putting sand back on top. In this way, the first hand must restart its task, in a process that seems to have no end.

The text of the inscription is part of Canto III of the Iliad, which describes a moment during the Trojan War in which its leaders decide to stop that bloody war. Then, while on the battlefield, the armies disarm. The warriors step down from the war chariots, remove their armor, and stand there, exposed, very close to one another. It is a moment of tense calm, of extreme vulnerability and, at the same time, of great hope for Achaeans and Trojans, historical enemies for decades. I associate that episode with the moment we lived after the signing of the peace process.

This project sought to echo the profound longing for peace that so many of us felt in Colombia.
